PGM 843 : "STELLAR VISIONS"
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : a cosmic electronic journey
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 6-27-08
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO: The Cosmic Journey school of electronic spacemusic
includes soundtracks for imaginary sci-fi movies, deep-drifting
stellar soundscapes, and spiritual innerspace explorations.
With its tonal flights across the galaxies and vast cosmic dramas,
the genre appeared to be an artifact of the 1980s. Like progressive
rock, it seemed to implode at its peak — a victim, perhaps, of its
own considerable success...and the fact that it takes real
inspiration and talent to do it well.
Artists like CONSTANCE DEMBY, IASOS and MICHAEL STEARNS
in California, JONN SERRIE in Atlanta, VANGELIS and KLAUS
SCHULZE in Europe, TOMITA, STOMU YAMASHTA and KITARO
in Japan, created an ethereal, expansive, cosmic sound that
found kindred spirits in symphonic composers like GUSTAV
HOLST, RALPH VAUGHAN WILLIAMS, ALAN HOVHANESS,
and the monumental sound cathedrals of BACH.
On this transmission of Hearts of Space called STELLAR
VISIONS, we're pleased to report that the genre's still alive,
with new artists and fine new work — at least in California.

INTRO: Dramatic, darkly emotional, and still exotic to Western ears,
the music of the Middle East continues to fascinate contemporary
musicians.
We're listening to a nicely crafted example of the Biblical epic
genre of movie music by SHELDON MIROWITZ from the soundtrack
for the television production "Columbus and the Age of Discovery."
On this 25th Anniversary retrospective edition of Hearts of Space,
we journey once again through these ancient nomadic soundspaces,
softly wailing melodies, and gently rocking rhythms, on a program
called CARAVAN.

PGM NOTE : the contemplative minimalism of LUDOVICO EINAUDI
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 5-30-08
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO: Italian composer LUDOVICO EINAUDI has enjoyed a long
and very successful career in Europe, marked by a dozen albums,
fifteen film scores, hundreds of concerts and a retrospective
performance at the famous opera house La Scala in Milano.
Einaudi began in the 1970s as a student of Italian avant-garde
composer LUCIANO BERIO at the Conservatory of Milan. He
came to the U.S. on a scholarship in 1982, where he absorbed
the language of classical minimalism, American popular and
ambient music — and laid the foundations for his own warm,
delicate, melodic style.
Like fine Italian food, fashion and design, Einaudi's music has
a humanized opulence and sensual appeal. The elements are
simple and often repetitive; the effect is subtle, contemplative,
satisfying, even profound.
On this transmission of Hearts of Space, a LUDIVICO EINAUDI
retrospective called DIVENIRE. We have music from across his
career, including selections from STANZE, LE ONDE, I GIORNI,
EDEN ROC, our title album DIVENIRE or "Become," and his lush
soundtrack for the film SOTTO FALSO NOME.

INTRO: As we stream into the 21st century, the rich legacy of
Indian music continues to expand around the world.
Seen as a kind of exotic 'seasoning' when classical masters like
ALI AKBAR KHAN and RAVI SHANKAR came to the west in the
1950s, it survived its trendy status as a psychedelic curiosity in
the 1960s, and has gone on to influence several generations of
western musicians, from avant-garde and electronic, to devotional.
In an age of rapid innovation and stylistic change, Indian music
has proven to be amazingly durable due to its profound insight
into tone and rhythm...and use of the drone — a gravitational
center that keeps some of the world's best musicians in its orbit.
On this transmission of Hearts of Space, another journey in the
Indian music orbit called PLANET INDIA.

INTRO: This week we continue our retrospective series
"25 YEARS IN SPACE," celebrating our 25th year of national
broadcasting.
This time it's another classic program from the mid 1980s —
the halcyon days of ambient and electronic music, a decade
when new instruments and recording techniques were breeding
new sounds and even new genres of atmospheric music.
The aim was to slow down, dematerialize, and spatially expand
instrumental music... in the words of the seminal English artist,
theorist and record producer BRIAN ENO, "to create calm,
and a space to think."
Eno not only popularized the term "ambient music" to describe
the style, he created or produced a number of its defining
albums...including our featured album THE PEARL, a 1984
collection of elegant miniatures for expanded piano and
synthesizer by California ambient/avant-garde composer
HAROLD BUDD and BRIAN ENO.
The warm, subtle sheen of THE PEARL...on this edition...
of Hearts of Space.

PGM 837 : "AMERICAN PRIMITIVE"
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : an acoustic excursion in the American soundscape
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 4-25-08
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO: The rich, slow, slightly dissonant acoustic guitar
harmonies of WILL ACKERMAN. It's the sound that launched
the Windham Hill label in 1976 and re-energized what
pioneering steel-string guitarist JOHN FAHEY called the
"American primitive guitar."
Primitive because the emphasis was on personal experimentation
and emotional authenticity; American because it drew upon our
complex melting-pot of musical traditions — hymns, folk and
popular songs, blues, jazz, maverick classical, ethnic rhythms
and immigrant genres — a panorama of musical sources,
freely reinvented.
With 30 years perspective, we can see that Ackerman struck a
deep vein in American culture and enriched it with a new level
of quality. His success inspired a generation of acoustic
musicians to trust their instincts, stick to their instruments,
keep it simple...and from the heart.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, another acoustic
excursion in the American soundscape called AMERICAN
PRIMITIVE.

PRIMITIVE.

INTRO: This week we continue our 25th Anniversary retrospective
series. On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, we go back to
the early days of the techno-tribal sound, with a 1988 program
called ANCIENT EVENINGS.
After years of nonstop electrification of popular music, the 1980s
saw a turn toward so-called "world music" from ethnic, traditional
and even aboriginal cultures. World music fusions by popular artists
like PAUL SIMON on GRACELAND and PETER GABRIEL on his solo
albums "MELT" and SECURITY inspired spacemusic composers to
ground the ethereal sound of electronic instruments by combining
them with earthy rhythms, trance percussion and ritual sounds.
This program featured English composer GARRY HUGHES' second
solo album ANCIENT EVENINGS, and STEVE ROACH's epic double
album inspired by the ancient aboriginal soundscape of Australia,
DREAMTIME RETURN — plus music by world frame drum per-
cussionist GLEN VELEZ from SEVEN HEAVEN, by GRATEFUL DEAD
drummer and ethno-musicologist MICKEY HART from DAFOS,
and by spacemusic composers KEVIN BRAHENY and STEVE ROACH
from WESTERN SPACES.
In the mythology of the Aborigines, the "dreamtime" was a
prehistoric era of continuous paradise. Documentary filmmaker
DAVID STAHL met STEVE ROACH while working on a film about
aboriginal rock paintings called ART OF THE DREAMTIME.
David Stahl writes:
"The ancient magic the initiated knew in the bush may already
be lost, yet a different magic, a universal subconscious longing
for a Dreamtime Return is firmly planted today in the mind of
modern man and in his heart."
These artists are all exploring a deeper, older sense of time and
space, which we can share.

INTRO: This week we find inspiration in a very strange place for
Hearts of Space: the world of martial arts film soundtracks.
How martial arts and contemplative music relate...requires a bit
of explanation. Chinese words are made of shorter words put
together. The normal translation of the Chinese word "wu" is
fighting or military, while "shu" is art. Wushu, therefore, means
"the art of fighting" or martial arts.
But there's a more philosophical translation, where "wu" is not
"fighting" but "to stop fighting," and "shu" means "technique."
So traditional Chinese wushu is about the technique of stopping
or averting conflict. According to film director RONNY YU, "the
better you are at wushu, the better peacemaker you are." Now
there's a message that's relevant today.
So if the most skillful form of conflict leads to peace, then the
most effective martial arts music should exhibit calm, balance,
and serenity. On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, a journey
in the world of Far East contemplative sound called WUSHU.

INTRO: Way back in 1986, the Recording Academy in its wisdom
decided to give an official name and a Grammy award to a popular
new sound in instrumental music. Unfortunately, they chose the
name "New Age" music. 22 years later it sounds...insane.
What were they thinking? What kind of music could possibly
live up to an expectation like that?
As a marketing category, things got off to a bad start.
Musical categories are never 100% precise, but this was anarchy.
Every kind of instrumental music that wasn't obviously jazz, folk,
or classical was dumped into the New Age bins. The home studio
revolution was in full swing, so just about any artist that released
an instrumental album wound up there.
When cross-cultural saxophonist YUSEF LATEEF won the first
New Age Grammy in 1987, he had to call his producer and ask
"What is this 'new age' and why are they calling my album that?".
With no filters and no standards, the genre soon had a reputation
for inconsistent quality and boring music. After a few years the
trend peaked, and both artists and listeners moved on. Some
electronic music formerly known as New Age came to be called
Ambient; the New Age handle had become a marketing taboo.
In 25 years of Hearts of Space, we've rarely mentioned the term,
while trying to bring you the best examples of electronic space,
ambient and contemplative music — all of which were once called
New Age. See, that's the thing: you could hate the name and still
find excellent music there. Well, if Barack Obama can talk about
political taboos like race and hope in his presidential campaign,
we can certainly take a moment to reflect on what's good about
new age music, while not denying any of its faults.
The core quality of the new age genre is music that's gentle,
peaceful and harmonious. While most music is designed to
stimulate, the word "relaxing" is joined to it at the hip. The
best of it is "psycho-acoustic" : psychologically and emotionally
stimulating, even when it's physically relaxing. Most of us can
use a little of that. As we say....slow music for fast times.
As a form of sonic landscape, new age music aims to create images
of heaven on earth — just as gardens did for centuries in the
Middle East and Asia. The best new age artists are skilled sound
designers and producers, who create very sophisticated sonic
environments.

INTRO: The choral music of the Russian Orthodox Church has a
history that extends back to the ancient monastic chants of the
Byzantine empire, over a thousand years ago.
In Russia, the music of the Orthodox church evolved into some
of the purest and most beautiful music ever written for the
unaccompanied human voice. The Russian sacred service, sung
in the old high Slavonic language and called "The Divine Liturgy,"
is designed to set the soul soaring beyond earthly cares.
The solemn bells, flickering candles, golden icons, and deep
reverberation of the Russian cathedrals create the context;
the profound basses, the angelic sopranos, and the exquisite
harmonies of the large mixed choruses — all make this one of
the most soul stirring forms of 'sacred spacemusic' in existence.
This extraordinary collection of Orthodox prayers and hymns from
guest producer ELLEN HOLMES highlights a timeless Russian
tradition of faith and devotion. Featured composers are some of
the great all-stars of Russian liturgical music: familiar names
like RACHMANINOV and TCHAIKOVSKY, church composers like
TURCHANINOV, KEDROV, BORTNIANSKY, and the great Bulgarian
composer DOBRI CHRISTOV.
