PGM NOTE : adrift in the winter atmospheres
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 12-30-05
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: Drifting in the winter atmosphere / chiming tones echo
across the icy fjords / and the cello sings of the melancholy depths /
in a land of life suspended.

It's a sound and an image we return to from time to time.
I'm Stephen Hill, and we're going to do it once again on this
edition of Hearts of Space...called NORTHERN LIGHTS 3.

PGM NOTE : sublime voices and eternal spaces of sacred music
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 12-23-05
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: If music can be called sacred, then it must exalt the
spirit, heal the psyche and focus the mind (to some degree) on
the eternal. And it must do this while immersed in the heartache,
joy and imperfection of the human panorama.
Each year during the holiday season, something deep in the
human spirit reaches out through all the chaos and compromise of
our world, in search of images of a more perfect place. In the
words of E.C. LE GUIN, "Since time out of mind, singing has been
principal to the observation of this sacred and crucial time;
it celebrates, exhorts, reflects; in it we can find an outlet
or a retreat."
On this transmission of Hearts of Space, a journey in the
eternal spaces of sacred music called VOX SUBLIMAE (sublime voices).

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : a journey in contemplative sound and light
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 12-09-05
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: PHOS HILARON is the name of an ancient Greek hymn sung
at the lighting of the evening candles; it means "joyful light"
-- an act of devotion embedded in a daily ritual. Here in the
northern hemisphere, the light of the sun is at its lowest at
the winter solstice, so we illuminate the season with every
kind of light. We gather in reverberant spaces and sing together.
The sound of massed voices is an image of harmony and unity;
echoing on itself, it builds an image of infinity.
The history of devotional chant extends thousands of years
before the Christian era. In the monasteries of medieval Europe,
chant became a form of worship, a foundation of the daily ritual.
Even in our chaotic, mostly secular times, across boundaries of
culture and religion -- these venerable chants have the power
to move us deeply.

INTRO: After the often painful and turbulent days of November,
we seek relief from dark and gloomy emotions. We look forward

to luminous -- harbingers of the season of light and celebration
to come. On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, we echo that
journey through the fragile, pellucid landscape of the psyche,

FEED DATE : 11-25-05
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: This week it's the Thanksgiving holiday -- the perfect time
to explore the feeling of gratitude. The Taoist masters teach us
that autumn is the time to reflect upon life. If we've enjoyed a
good harvest or a successful year, we express our thanks. If the
year's been difficult, then we're thankful for what we have and
resolve to do better in the future. Yet the true appreciation of
life doesn't require wealth or plenty, if we acknowledge the
precious quality of everyday things. It requires only...GRATITUDE.

INTRO: The signature sound of the wirestrung harp, the signature
lilt of a Celtic dance: a signal that joy, beauty, and wistful sadness --
the panorama of human emotion -- will stretch our feelings.

As always the musicianship is extraordinary; there must be more musical
and vocal talent per square mile in the Celtic regions than almost anywhere.
It's a genre that's met and mastered the test of time, combining past and
present, tradition and creativity, and reinventing itself for every generation.

On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, another journey in the Celtic
soundscape called CELTIC TWILIGHT 3.

INTRO: In the multi-hued autumn twilight, the rich, coppery tones
of the cello resonate naturally with the changing tones of the landscape.
Perhaps no western instrument has the musical and emotional range and
depth; from its foundational role in the orchestra and the string quartet,
to its uncanny vocal emulations and contemplative solo flights...
the cello seems to know no boundaries.
On this transmission of Hearts of Space, a cello-centric journey with
piano, strings, and a touch of electric guitar, on a program called
NOVEMBER TONES.

INTRO: A stormy night in Scorpio brings it's own little shop of
horrors -- we're in the time when Celtic and Pagan tradition say
the dark spirits are closer to earth. Can you prove otherwise?

Appearances deceive...things are not what they seem...and we're
obliged to measure our fears. On this transmission of Hearts of
Space, we brave the storm...and quest into the dark forest
on a program called SHAPESHIFTER.

PGM NOTE : a cathartic excursion for Scorpio
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 10-28-05
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: Terror -- a word we're hearing WAY too much of these days.
It's terrible when real, but since the 1920s, when psychological
terror made the leap from the novel to silent film, horror has
been the genre of choice for vicarious fans of the macabre, the
ominous, the morbid, the diabolical.
These are the darkly poetic images associated with the often
painful days of Scorpio. It's a taste that's both aesthetic and
cathartic: a willful immersion in our ancient limbic emotions of
danger and fear...and a defiant exercise of our impulse for
self-preservation.

lower in the sky, and the sound of the season cools, slows, and
turns inward, embracing the dark ambient realm of mystery
and melancholy.

PGM NOTE : soft sounds and serene spaces of the native flute
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 10-07-05

INTRO: The lonely, introspective sound of the cedar flute.
For thousands of years, it's echoed across the Native American
soundscape of the Southwest. These days you're as likely to hear
the sound of slot machines as the native flute on Indian land --
a sonic paradox that illustrates the challenge of preserving
traditional ways in the modern world.

Today, the native flute's been adopted by non-native musicians,
drawn to its essential simplicity and soulful tonality. It's a sound
we like to return to every autumn. On this transmission of
Hearts of Space, a program called CEDAR SOUL.

INTRO: It was funk music genius and former hair stylist
GEORGE CLINTON who observed years ago that, in one respect,
music was just like hair; when one style was getting hot,
another one was getting cold. So if you wanted to be successful,
you had to be able to adapt to the new styles.
Something like that happened to classical music in the late
1960's. Electronic musicians did restyled versions of great
classical pieces to showcase their new sound on familiar material.
The original and by far the most famous of these projects was
WENDY CARLOS' "Switched-On Bach" which sold over 3 million albums
and introduced several generations of listeners to the sound of
synthesizers.
The idea continues today. On this transmission of HEARTS of
SPACE, a program of electronic transcriptions of classical
masterworks called REMASTERPIECE.

INTRO: The Japanese idea of beauty extends from brash and bold to
the ideal of beauty, called shibui. Shibui means an understated
kind of beauty, a quality that speaks quietly, for itself.
Shibui objects have a refined, unobtrusive sophistication. They
embody utility, maturity, complexity, history -- the patina that
only time can bring: a deeply spiritual kind of elegance, rooted
in the quiet appreciation of nature.
Today, both Japanese and western musicians attracted by this
aesthetic are creating fusions of traditional Japanese and
contemporary ambient music.

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : an anti-gravity journey on floating electronic waves
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 9-16-05
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: ...Saw an item in the paper recently about the Russian
space program. Seems they're so desperate for money to keep going,
they're going to sell cosmonaut rides to anyone for $80,000
a pop. The highlight of the experience is about two minutes of
weightlessness in a special plane that climbs really high and
then dives down in a huge arc. If you don't get sick, it's
supposed to be big fun.

On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE called "WEIGHTLESS,"
we're going to bring you almost a whole hour of floating spacemusic
pretty much for free, and it's guaranteed not to cause any motion
sickness. In fact, it's a very pleasant sensation.

PGM 741 "SUMMERTRONICA 2"

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : warm-blooded ambient for high summer
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 2-Sep-2005

INTRO : How to make sense of the now endless permutations of electronic sound?
is the question. Styles and categories have multiplied, verging on 'distinctions
without a difference.' A more intuitive set of descriptions might serve us better:
warm to cold; dark to light; active to relaxed; dense to spacious. Hopefully,
it won't be any more complicated than trying to describe a good cabernet.

In the so-called "Celestial Jukebox" of the near future, perhaps you'll be able
to order music from a menu of qualities: "Computer: play me something
medium active, spatially expanded, with amber harmonies and timbres of
mahogany and silver."

Today, electronic musicians have the creative fun of choosing these qualities
in the studio, as part of the craft of 'sound design'; we still get to have the
fun of bringing their work together for you on these programs; and with
some easy software, you can now do it yourself if you like.

On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, a warm, spatially open, mildly
mysterious ambient collection for high summer called SUMMERTRONICA 2.

The HOS Playlist blog

Starting this week, we will make the HOS weekly playlists available via a standard RSS feed. To make your information gathering more efficient, you will now be able to see the playlist using an RSS reader. If you're reading this, you probably know what I'm referring to. If not, check out one of the free, online RSS readers like Bloglines.

To encourage a little more interaction with our listeners and between our listeners, I have enabled comments. Please feel free to add your comments on each show.

We're also including our weekly 30 second promo for each show along with the playlist feed as an MP3 "podcast" enclosure. Just click the title of the show to play it. Sadly, we are still not able to offer the entire program via this very friendly technology due to copyright restrictions.

As on our web site, the highlighted links within the playlist take you to the Amazon.com page for that album. The audio samples there will help you to confirm that this is the album you are looking for.

Thanks for your interest in, and support of, the music we bring you on Hearts of Space!
