PGM 685R : "THE HEALING HARP"
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : a winter celebration of the harp
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 12-28-07
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: THE HARP. For over 4000 years, it's brought
the human family a little bit of heaven on earth.

From its beginnings in Mesopotamia, it spread across
the ancient world to Asia, Egypt, Greece, and Africa.
In Medieval times, it was used for sacred and secular
music, and to comfort the dying.

As the instrument of the bards and troubadors,
it played a key role in the evolution of folk music.
In the 19th century, the pedal harp matured into a
concert instrument and took its place in the orchestra.
And in the 20th century it went electric — even laser.

Whether wirestrung, cross-strung, single, double,
or triple strung, pedal or electric, folk or classical —
there are harps for every purpose.

PGM NOTE : winter treasures from the sacred choral repertoire

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: The legacy of choral singing is never more cherished
than during the holiday season, when it brings warmth and light
to the winter darkness by opening the heart and feeding the soul.
From the Christian churches and cathedrals of Europe and the U.S.,
to the Orthodox churches of Russia, central Asia, and the Holy Land,
the human family gathers to listen, sing, and worship together.

After more than ten centuries of evolution, some of the finest
choral music was written in the last 100 years by a special breed
of contemporary composers, who respect and
extend the tradition.

On this transmission of Hearts of Space, another compilation
of sublime choral pieces from our longtime guest producer
ELLEN HOLMES called TO THEE WE SING.

PGM 825 : "HYMNOS"
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : contemplative hymns and prayers for the holiday season
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 12-14-07
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: The Greek word hymnos means a "song of praise,"
prayer or adoration, normally to a god or religious figure.
The roots of the word go back to the Hittites over six thousand
years ago and mean "to sing." There were hymns in ancient
Egypt and India; in the west, the Homeric hymns, praising
the gods of Greek mythology, date from the 7th century B.C.

Praise is affirmative, so hymns are naturally positive experi-
ences. Whether stirring and intense, or quiet and contemplative,
the effect is to lift the spirit. It's a feeling that's abundant
during the end of the year holiday season, a time when —
against all odds —the human family renews its commitment
to generosity, goodwill and peace.

On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, a selection of
quietly joyous hymns and instrumental prayers called HYMNOS.

PGM NOTE : heavenly harmonies and angelic voices
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 12-07-07
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: Each year in December, we gather to sing sacred hymns
and songs. For over a millennium, the holiday season in Christian
cultures has been associated with the sublime, ethereal high voices
of female sopranos, male sopranos or countertenors, and boys choirs.

In the massed voices, we hear an image of unity and peace;
in the heavenly harmonies, we hear the sound of angels,
magically brought to earth.

On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, a holiday celebration
of choral singing called VOICES IN THE NIGHT.

INTRO: The life of a political slogan is rarely glorious and
always brief. Bush the Elder had a memorable one in 1988
which lingered past its natural lifespan as a weapon of satire:
"a thousand points of light."

Despite the history, it's a lovely image that comes alive as
we enter the holiday season and light becomes a symbol of
joy and generosity of spirit. On this transmission of Hearts
of Space, we sound the season with a turn-of-winter journey
called POINTS OF LIGHT.

INTRO: If there's one quality that applies to every variety
of jazz, it's great musicianship. These cats can
*really* play,
and sometimes they get so into it that virtuosity becomes
the subject of the music.

But there's another tradition in jazz, famously exemplified
by MILES DAVIS' classic KIND OF BLUE. Lyrical. Quiet.
Subtle. Spacious. It's not about how many notes you play:
it's about how beautifully you play them. As one musician
says, it's about "loving every note."

On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, we explore a
quietly intense world of melody, space and feeling, on a
Nordic spacejazz journey called RESTRAINT.

INTRO: Composer HAROLD BUDD really started something
back in 1980 when he released THE PLATEAUX OF MIRROR,
the second album in BRIAN ENO's seminal Ambient Music series.

The chiming tones of Budd's floating electric piano, combined
with Eno's studio atmospheres, created what have been called
"enchanted landscapes and underwater domains."

It's a sound that's still influential and popular today:
accessible and enjoyable...while it quietly insinuates itself
into the deepest reaches of your psyche.

PGM 820 : "SPECTRAL VOICES"
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : the floating world of harmonic overtone singing
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 11-02-07
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: The panorama of musical vocalization stretches across
cultural time and space, from simple songs and chants to the
most elaborate art music for chorus and orchestra. It's a medium
that continues to evolve, incorporating the past while it forges
into the future.

The origins of the Central Asian tradition of harmonic chanting
or "overtone" singing are lost in time, but are alive today, both
in source cultures like Tuva and Tibet, and in the work of
experimental singers and composers.

On this transmission of Hearts of Space, a journey into the
ghostly, floating world of harmonic singing.

PGM NOTE : a dark ambient journey for Halloween
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 10-26-07
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: At the end of October we celebrate Halloween, the
lingering expression of the Celtic pagan festival that marked
the final extinction of summer. It's a time when the dead were
said to revisit the mortal world, and large communal bonfires
were lit to ward off the dark spirits. Today it's devolved into
a commercial event for the candy industry, with an unusually
grim theme — while the fires, at least in California, are a
fearsome, destructive presence.

On this transmission of Hearts of Space, we wander in the
gloomy underworlds, ghostly chambers and haunted caverns,
on a program called...BLACKWATER.

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 10-12-07

INTRO: Chamber music is an indoor art by definition.
Yet nothing underscores the complex colors of the autumn
landscape like thesound of a chamber group, especially
when it includes the plaintive tones of the cello, the oboe,
or the acoustic guitar.

In the fading light, the shadows grow longer, the days
grow shorter, and the
sounds of the season grow darker.
The natural world contracts...and prepares for the long
winter's sleep.

On this transmission of Hearts of Space, we echo the
season with a chamber-electronic journey for fall called
AN AUTUMN GARDEN.

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : gene-splicing Native flute and ambient electronics
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 10-05-07
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: The "archaic revival" movement rediscovers forgotten
archetypes from our collective past. As MICKEY HART explained
in his book "Drumming at the Edge of Magic," when we look
back to the deepest origins of music, we rediscover the flute,
the rattle, and the drum."

On the North American continent, the native tribes built
their music on these elements — music for ritual, dance and
ceremony. At the end of the 20th century, the traditional genre
wastransformed when new instruments were added and the
cedar flute was popularized by Native musicians like CARLOS
NAKAI. Along with non-native and ambient musicians, they
opened up the tradition and expanded the sound to the scale
of the western landscape.

On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, we track the
gene-splicing of Native American music with ambient
electronics and the American landcape, on a program called
FLUTE RATTLE DRUM...SPACE.

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: A border can be a boundary...or a grey area —
a line of demarcation...or a zone of ambiguity. Borders
between countries are political boundaries; they can be
the scene of violent confrontation, as in the Middle East,
or so remote that few people ever see them.

Outside of politics, a border can be a barrier...or a zone
of transition. In music, we often find ambiguous borders
between styles and genres — in fact, much of today's
fusion music is interesting because it
deliberately disregards
borders. There's a lot of information...at the borders.

On this transmission of Hearts of Space, a journey in
ambiguous, transitional spaces called BORDERLANDS.

PGM NOTE : a trance-ambient introspection
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 9-21-07
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: What's in a trance? It's a state of mind that has a
history of fascinating society through the ages.

From ancient shamanic ceremonies that provoke visions
with extended rituals and mind-blowing chemistry, through
the whirling dervishes of 13th century Islam, the hypnosis
techniques of Professor Mesmer and others in the 20th
century, right up to the cathartic all-night dance marathons
of the rave generation — inducing trance states...
is something like the extreme sports division of mysticism.

On this edition of Hearts of Space called TRANCE-FORMATION,
we'll take a slightly safer approach — with a trance-ambient
journey by musicians who attempt to create this experience
in sound.

FEED DATE : 9-14-07
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: If you're not an aficionado of Early Music, you may not
have heard of it, but the ancestor of the guitar was the vihuela,
also called the viola da mano. With six sets of double strings
tuned like a lute, the vihuela was the 15th-century bridge between
the the Arabic oud and the modern six-string Spanish guitar.

The rich fusion of cross-cultural influences from Iberia, North
Africa, Jewish and Gypsy cultures that produced flamenco in the
18th century were built on it, and variations on this much loved
music continue to grow and develop today.

On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, we explore this world
with another journey in the Spanish-Moorish soundscape called
VIHUELA.

PGM NOTE : unlocking the mystery of relative motion

FEED DATE : 8-31-07
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: TIME. We watch it, measure it, charge for it and, if we
have too much, we even try to kill it. But in the end, it's a
mystery. For centuries, musicians have played with time,
discovering that time is related to motion and rhythm — that
time is fluid, a perception that can be modified, if you
know how. On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, we try to
unlock the secrets of relative motion...on a program called
SLOW TIME.

PGM 813 : "THE MUSIC OF MYST"
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : a journey in mythic soundworlds
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 8-24-07
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: One of the great inspirations to brilliant computer
programmers and offbeat artists everywhere is the story
of brothers RAND and ROBYN MILLER — creators of the hit
computer game MYST.

From the first CD-ROM edition in 1993, the MYST franchise
evolved through four sequels and a spinoff, sold over 12 million
games and spawned six soundtrack albums, three novels, several
comics, and an online version.

Inspired by Jules Verne's "Mysterious Island," from the beginning
the Miller brothers blazed their own trail, setting new content and
visual standards, and ultimately changing the way people played
computer games. In a world of gory, violent "first person shooters,"
MYST invented its own category, with immersive environments
of stunning artistic quality, texture and atmosphere, and a focus
on puzzle-solving in a moral universe driven by a mythic story.

The original music of MYST was the work of ROBYN MILLER. In
addition to his graphic talents, he was a fine ambient/electronic
musician. Subtle, deep and atmospheric, his music set the tone
for the emotional experience of MYST. Sequels were scored by
ROBYN MILLER, JACK WALL, and TIM LARKIN.

PGM NOTE : the sound of tranquility in motion
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 8-17-07
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: These days, most of us move at an unprecedented pace.
We schedule ourselves to the minute, zip down the freeway
at speeds our ancestors could scarcely imagine, and run —
to keep fit. When it's time for a vacation, we go faster, and
jet off to another continent. No wonder, when we get there,
we find our bodies are lagging behind.

The ancient arts of Yoga and Tai Chi teach us how to find a
calm center in the midst of constant movement. And a group
of ambient electronic artists make music that creates this
sense of tranquility...in motion.

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 8-10-07
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: Modern Turkish music has come to us through a path as
complex and ornamental as Turkish calligraphy. Located in the
Eastern Mediterranean at the gateway to Central Asia, for
centuries Turkey was an economic and cultural crossroads,
absorbing influences from Persian, Byzantine, Southern
European, and Middle Eastern traditions...and cross-pollinating
them with its own rich heritage.

For most of the 600 years of the Ottoman empire, Turkey
dominated the region. When KEMAL ATATURK consciously
modernized Turkey in the early 20th century, western classical
and popular music were added to an already complex cultural
mix. Today Istanbul has one of the most vibrant and varied
musical scenes anywhere.

On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, a journey in the
contemporary Turkish soundscape called CRESCENT MOON.

hit the road in our annual quest to relax, expand, squander
fossil fuel and warm the atmosphere.

It's a time for stretching boundaries, expanding the envelope,
exploring. Yet below the dynamic surface of the season, a
slower, more subtle experience awaits, if we can just slow
down enough to find it.

INTRO: In the desert, extremes of sun, wind, temperature and
terrain challenge all living things to evolve a strategy for
survival. So desert travelers take it slow and steady. But for
those who venture into its vast spaces, the promise of discovery
awaits: a mythic environment of isolation and introspection,
concealed by panoramic expanses. In the words of EDWARD ABBEY,
the desert is a "window onto eternity."

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : a journey into the quiet heart of Africa
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 7-20-07
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: The lilting songs of the Baka pygmies of Cameroon have
achieved international fame through the efforts of sympathetic
Western musicians. Just as DNA research has shown that Africa is
the origin point of the human species, in the last 200 years, the
infectious rhythms and harmonies of African music have bred new
styles of western music — originally laying the foundation for
blues, jazz and other forms of popular music, and more recently,
spawning a host of brilliant variations of what we now call
World Music.

While the majority of African music is for dance and celebration,
there's also a more contemplative sound. On this transmission
of Hearts of Space, we journey through the rhythms into the quiet
heart of African music...on a program called AFRICAN GENESIS.
