PGM 062R : "THE BOOK OF SOUNDS"
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : HANS OTTE's minimalist piano masterwork
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 1-26-07
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: We rarely devote an entire program to a single artist,
but the work of German composer HANS OTTE is so subtle and
sophisticated that it really deserves to be heard all by itself.

HANS OTTE was born in 1926 and studied in Italy, in Germany
with pianist WALTER GIESEKING, and at Yale University with
composer PAUL HINDEMITH. He had a very long career in Germany as
a composer and pianist. From 1959 to 1984, he directed the music
department at Radio Bremen, where he was an enthusiastic promoter
of fellow composers of experimental music and sound art.

THE BOOK OF SOUNDS is the title of his 12-part cycle of pieces
for solo piano. Otte began working on "The Book of Sounds" in 1979
and spent almost three years refining this deceptively simple
music. He says he wished to "rediscover the piano as an instrument
of timbre and tuneful sound, with all its possibilities of
resonance, color and dynamics"... and to "rediscover playing as
the possibility of experiencing oneself in sound, of becoming
at one in time with all the sounds around one"... and to
"rediscover the listener as a partner of sound and silence, who
also wishes to be totally at one with sound."

The whole piece takes over an hour and 20 minutes, so we're
only able to bring you nine of the twelve parts on this program.
Hans Otte has taken contemporary minimalism with its meditative
repetitions, fused it with influences from JOHN CAGE to BACH,
and brought it to another level of sensitivity and feeling. Pianist
HERBERT HENCK calls it "a milestone of European minimalism."

INTRO: The polar night creeps southward across the top of Europe,
while the winter snows and ice hold the fjords and forests in
their grip. In a land of dark and cold, the focus turns within,
and the music of Scandinavia, the Baltics and Russia warms the
heart and fills the soul. Classical, jazz and traditional folk
sounds stretch from melancholy to an ethereal lightness:
slow, majestic and beautiful.

PGM 790 : "INTERSTELLAR"
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : a cosmic electronic journey
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 1-12-07
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: Surfing the void...exploring the vastness of interstellar
space.

In fact, astrophysicists tell us, the void is not really empty:
it's full of gas, dust, and plasma / ions, atoms, and molecules /
electromagnetic radiation, cosmic rays, and magnetic fields —
not to mention the occasional asteroid. It's the stuff of dreams
and fantasy, the domain of science fiction, the mission of NASA...
and it's a virtual journey we can take anytime with a little help
from our travel agents of cosmic electronica. On this transmission
of HEARTS of SPACE, we suit up for a deep space journey called
INTERSTELLAR.

PGM 717R "HARMONIC VOICES 2"

(click program title above for 30 second MP3 promo clip)

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM 717R : "HARMONIC VOICES 2"
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : the subtle world of harmonic overtone singing
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 1-05-07
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: It's a bit of a stretch thinking of your head as a
musical instrument, but for practitioners of the art of
overtone singing, it's all about head cavities and how they
resonate. At least that's the science part of it. The emotional
and cultural part is a lot more interesting.
Mongolian herdsmen and Tibetan monks developed the
technique for solitary entertainment and meditation centuries
ago. The famous 'throat singers' of Tuva have their own style;
and with a little practice, almost anyone can sing two or
three distinct tones at the same time — an ability that allows
you to sing harmony...with yourself.
It's living research into a hidden musical dimension, with
sounds that range from beautiful to ethereal to absolutely
spine-tingling. Beginning with the pioneering work of DAVID
HYKES and THE HARMONIC CHOIR in the 1970s, overtone
singing and overtone music has cast its spell on a dedicated
group of western musicians, mostly in the U.S. and Germany.
