FINAL POST FOR THIS BLOG

We've been posting our playlists here since September 2005. A lot of water has passed under the Internet bridge since then, and it's time to consolidate our feeds under one roof at our own web site. We'll be installing software to do that shortly and you'll find all our feeds nicely grouped at HOS.com.

In the meantime please use our HOS News feed, currently hosted by Typepad:

http://heartsofspace.typepad.com/news/atom.xml

There is a category of posts for New Programs which provides access to each week's playlist via links to the correct playlist pages on HOS.com, as well as a podcast feed of our weekly 30 second promos:

http://www.hos.com/rss/HOS_promo_podcast.xml

The advantage of viewing the playlists on-site is that you also see full color graphics of the album covers, plus all the embedded links to retail sources, artist and record label sites, and additional user services like a handy PRINT command, which reformats the playlist for printing direct from any browser.

Ultimately our direct feeds will contain these elements, and all of this will appear in any standard feed reader as well.

The HOS News feed also contains up to date information about our primary web services and our streaming archive. If you haven't visited our site in a while, please stop by. In February 2009 we introduced a very cool custom Flash player with improved graphics, a heads-up metadata display, support for unlimited personal playlists, and much improved sound quality.

If you have any comments, please write to us at help@hos.com.

PGM 873 : "MORE AMBIENT COOL"
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : a journey in the lazy, hazy Fourth World soundscape
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 4-24-09
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: You're listening to the mysterious "Fourth World" music
of trumpeter/composer JON HASSELL: an apparition arising out of
the hazy cross-cultural soundscape between classical Indian vocal
music, electronics, and cool jazz. It's a sound that's been widely
influential in contemporary music for over 25 years — a popular
atmospheric hybrid that defies category...by design.

On this transmission of Hearts of Space, we invoke the spirits
of departed masters like cool jazz trumpeter MILES DAVIS, Indian
vocalist PANDIT PRAN NATH and electronics pioneer KARLHEINZ
STOCKHAUSEN...on a journey called MORE AMBIENT COOL.

PGM NOTE : entrancing Middle Eastern electronic fusion
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 4-17-09
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: That's SMADJ...out of Tunisia by way of Paris. He brings
together the venerable oud and the sultry rhythms of North Africa
with the latest electronic sounds.

Today the mediasphere is alive with a new kind of "world music."
The old masters of the great ethnic music traditions have a
global audience, while DJ's sample beats and create new world
mixes for the intelligent dance floor. Almost any musician can
have their own studio and release their music worldwide online —
with photos, video and text—on giant sites like MySpace
and Facebook.

The successful ones travel, perform, and build worldwide networks
of collaborators and audience. The Internet ties it all together.
For these musicians, even in the midst of all the political
struggles of today — it really
is a new world.

On this 25th Anniversary retrospective edition of Hearts of Space,
a journey in the Middle Eastern electronic fusion zone called
EQUILIBRIUM.

PGM 872 : "AMAZING GRACE"
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : 15 variations of the classic hymn for Easter
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 4-10-09
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: If popularity is the measure, the English hymn
"Amazing Grace" must be one of the best loved
songs in existence.
We found over 6400 versions of it on just one online music site!

It's been recorded by everyone from Elvis to The 3 Tenors to the
Cherokee National Youth Choir, in every style you could imagine—
and a lot more you couldn't, including Maori, Reggae, Heavy Metal,
and Doo Wop.

The hymn comes with a good story. The
words were written
around 1772 by an English slave trader turned Christian preacher
named JOHN NEWTON. The pentatonic
melody first appeared in
hymn books around 1829 and was called "New Britain." It's thought
to be Scottish or Irish originally, which accounts for the many
versions featuring the bagpipes.

On this Easter week transmission of Hearts of Space, we spread
the love with a program conceived by longtime guest producer
ELLEN HOLMES and devoted entirely to our most popular hymn...
AMAZING GRACE.

PGM NOTE : an East Asian journey for a blossoming spring
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: Many aspects of traditional Japanese culture originated
in China. The Japanese spring custom of cherry blossom viewing
or
hanami goes back to the 8th century, but it was inspired by
the Chinese aristocracy.

Today the progress of the
'sakura' or cherry blossom wave
as it moves north across Japan is a regular feature of the
spring weather reports. You gotta love a country that has
a cherry blossom report.

On this transmission of Hearts of Space, we think of cherry
blossoms while we journey in the East Asian soundscape
on a program called SAKURA.

INTRO: The transition between winter and spring is never
predictable. After a time of darkness and confinement, we long
for light, air and freedom. We seek
change: space and openness,
movement and flow.

Filled with new purpose, we clean out old structures. In uncertain
times, we shine the light into dark places, and prepare for the
challenges ahead.
Transparency is the new watchword, the key
to trust.

On this transmission of Hearts of Space, a collection of freshly
grown and gracefully aged electronica for the season, on a

INTRO: The progression of the seasons is our context, a basic
fact of life. Yet there's hardly anything more powerful, pervasive
or profound.

From the frigid, binding grip of winter, we emerge in spring
into a world stirring with change and new life. It begins with
subtle sounds: the melting of ice, the rustle of the forest,
the singing of birds, the trickle of streams. Slowly, inexorably,
the natural world awakes; the light grows brighter, and we
begin to move.

On this transmission of Hearts of Space, a trans-seasonal
journey called WINTER INTO SPRING.

PGM NOTE : celebrating the timeless Celtic ballad
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 3-13-09
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: The buttery smooth sound of the Irish "low whistle."
When you consider we're coming up on the Spring Equinox, it's
easy to guess where we're headed this week. Yes, rain or shine,
war or peace, boom or bust, it's the season of rebirth and time
for our yearly celebration of the slow, deep side of Celtic music
— the timeless Celtic ballad. Quiet but oh-so-powerful, it captures
the reflective emotions: love, loss, sadness, nostalgia...and peace.

On this 25th Anniversary retrospective edition of Hearts of Space,
a classic journey in the Celtic soundscape, on a program called
BETWEEN THE WORLDS.

In the waning days of the 20th century, ancient music from
Ireland, Scotland, and Brittany leapt beyond its acoustic roots and
evolved a new electro/acoustic style, influenced by pop, ambient,
and country music and modern production values. But
whatever
the stylistic innovations, the heart and soul of Celtic music is
always melody.

PGM 868 : "INTO THE STORM"
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : spacemusic for turbulent times
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 3-06-09
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: In good times, life moves swiftly, with little time for
reflection. Warnings of impending disaster may go unheeded —
until it's too late. Confusion and chaos rule the day.

In stormy times, the wise remain calm, even when the world
around them is in turmoil. Turbulence may destroy structures
that lack a firm foundation, but this is necessary to build
stronger ones. In nature
and society, excess must be corrected.
Destruction...is also a path to renewal.

On this transmission of Hearts of Space, an electro-ambient
journey for turbulent times called INTO THE STORM.

PGM NOTE : banishing the winter blues with warmth and soul
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 2-27-09
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: Marooned in the depths of darkness, battered by storms,
cold and tired, ready for change. Does that sound like a metaphor
for the economy? Maybe it's just the weather. Either way, what we
need this week is a double dip of warmth and soul to chase away
the winter blues.

On this transmission of Hearts of Space, we banish those indigo,
cerulean and cobalt feelings...with a program called HAVEN.

PGM 866 : "TONES and OVERTONES"
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : the ghostly world of harmonic singing
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 2-20-09
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: The ancient practice of harmonic overtone singing has
come down through the ages, sometimes as occult knowledge,
sometimes in the mainstream of an exotic culture, sometimes
as avant-garde experimentation — but always possessed of a
quiet secret.

Hidden within the human voice and the resonant cavities of
the body is the ability to produce multiple harmonic tones;
and within
this, the possibility of spiritual absorption in a
subtle realm of ethereal sound.

When recirculated on themselves in a reverberant sanctuary,
voices and their overtones take on a psychic power that
approaches magic.

On this transmission of Hearts of Space, we revisit the
ghostly realm of harmonic singing, on a journey called
TONES and OVERTONES.

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : a classic spacemusic journey for winter
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 2-13-09
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: Winter...blankets the landscape with a leaden, contractive
force, relieved by intense contrasts. Defying the cold and dark,
the primordial hearth casts a soothing glow; the brilliant sun of
day and bright stars of the winter night contrast with the ashen
tones of a natural world in hibernation...while in the winter
soundscape, somber bass drones and dense atmospheres
are relieved by crystalline accents.

On this 25th Anniversary retrospective edition of Hearts of Space,
a classic electronic winter journey called GRAY LIGHT.
