=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : the sublime world of the contemplative piano
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 9-29-06
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: In the endlessly adaptable world of the piano, music can
be dense or transparent, active or still, harmonic or dissonant,
improvised or composed. So for the player, the piano offers a
virtually unlimited medium for artistic choice. For the listener,
the choices are much simpler: Does the music move us?
Is it what we want to hear?
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, the sublime,
coherent world of the contemplative piano, on a program called
IVORY,BLACK & GOLD.

PGM NOTE : subtle spaces of the Japanese soundscape
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 9-15-06
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: The Japanese idea of beauty extends from brash and bold to
the ideal of beauty, called shibui. Shibui means an understated
kind of beauty, a quality that speaks quietly, for itself.
Shibui objects have a refined, unobtrusive sophistication. They
embody utility, maturity, complexity, history -- the patina that
only time can bring: a deeply spiritual kind of elegance, rooted
in the quiet appreciation of nature.
Today, both Japanese and western musicians attracted by this
aesthetic are creating fusions of traditional Japanese and
contemporary ambient music.

PGM NOTE : Janis Mattox' sublime song cyle of loss and remembrance
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: We normally think of Brazil as an extroverted country
that celebrates life's sensual pleasures, but there's also an
introverted, contemplative side of Brazilian culture, beautifully
expressed in the life and work of the poet CECELIA MEIRELES,
who died in 1964.
In the poem SOLOMBRA or "Sunshadow," she created an intimate
conversation between herself and the spirit of her beloved husband,
whose bouts with depression led him to suicide. The poem is a
"sorrow-song" of grief, loss, detachment, and remembrance.
"Life goes away," she writes, "but the song remains."
Northern California composer JANIS MATTOX has taken Cecelia
Meireles' poems as the text for an elegant 7 movement song cycle
for soprano, violin, cello, and piano. It was recorded in an intensely
lyrical live performance in 2005, featuring Bolivian soprano KATIA
ESCALERA. The entire piece is written in the natural harmonic
intervals of "just intonation," using a specially tuned and electron-
ically enhanced piano created by the Good Sound Foundation.
In over 20 years of Hearts of Space, we've only found a handful
of pieces we felt deserved a program all to themselves.
This is one of them.
SOLOMBRA: the moving words of CECELIA MEIRELES, sung in
Portuguese, the sublime music of composer JANIS MATTOX...
on this edition of HEARTS OF SPACE.

PGM NOTE : a journey through the electronic looking glass
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 9-01-06
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: Feedback: a precise word, a simple concept —
like looking in a mirror. But when applied to electronic music,
it has a complex history. It was controlled feedback that elevated
the electric guitar to the realm of the gods in the 1960s and fueled
the rock revolution immortalized by JIMI HENDRIX and satirized in
SPINAL TAP. [OK, things got a little out of hand...]
In the electronic music era, feedback expanded to
arrays of
mirrors to enrich tone, sustain notes, create rhythms, and imply
space through echoes. Today we harness tens of thousands of echoes
to create spatial illusions with digital reverb. It's all done...
with sophisticated feedback.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, we follow the feedback
with another journey in electronic space called HALL OF MIRRORS.
