PGM 584R : "ARCTIC"
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : an ultra-chilled electronic journey in the glacial North
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 12-29-06
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: We're floating in the Arctic soundspace this time,
a world of translucent blue ice... frosted with snow... and ringed
by frigid slate-grey seas. On this winter transmission of HEARTS
of SPACE, we explore the music of these austere but compelling
landscapes...on a program called ARCTIC.
Since the rise of personal electronic studios in the 1970s,
composers have built images of these far northern landscapes on
a foundation of deep bass drones, and painted a world of glacial
quiet, primal drama, and timeless mystery.

INTRO: "When in doubt, write a hymn," was the formula for success
of English pop star ELTON JOHN. A rather large number of composers
have done just that, though I suspect they weren't in doubt: music
for massed voices has moved and inspired listeners since the
beginning of human history.
I'm STEPHEN HILL and on this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE,
a collection of hymns and sacred spaces for chorus on a holiday
program called CANTORUM.

INTRO: The Holiday season — Christmas, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, or
Chrismakkah — whatever you call it, it's the season for joyous
social celebration and quiet, interior contemplation at year's end.
The focus is on family and friends; generosity of spirit fills
the air, and the music of the season has a distinctive sound,
clear and bell-like, yet warm, full, and radiant.
Music from the Celtic tradition, with its lovely melodies and
skillful performances, is just the thing. On this transmission of
HEARTS of SPACE, a seasonal collection called COMFORT AND JOY 2.

PGM NOTE : Early Music reconsidered
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 12-08-06
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: The boom years for Early Music — Medieval, Renaissance
and Baroque — have come and gone. Like most musical trends,
it left a core of passionate fans, a larger group of casual listeners,
and the majority unaware of its charms.
At the end of the 16th century, The Camerata of Florence
revolutionized music by turning away from polyphony and returning
to an older style. In the 20th century, one of the drivers of the
Early Music revival was so-called "authentic performance" practice
— the attempt to reproduce the original sound and playing style
of the time on period instruments. Today, that's giving way to a
freer, more creative practice: aware and respectful of the original,
but open to improvisation, extension, and new discoveries.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, we focus on some of
those new discoveries in early music from the ECM label,
on a program called CAMERATA NOVA.

seeks it. In the words of composer ALEX CLINE, "It's a fire that

PGM NOTE : choral, vocal and instrumental music for the dark season
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 11-17-06
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: Descending into the short days of the dark season, we find
music that portrays human emotions at their most vulnerable: music
of pathos, loss and remembrance. These are some of our most
powerful and affecting feelings, and they call for music that
reaches into the depths of our souls.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, a special program of
choral, vocal and instrumental music for the dark season — from
guest producer ELLEN HOLMES — called LAMENTO.
A
lament is a cathartic song or poem expressing grief or
mourning. Many of the oldest and most enduring poems in human
history have been laments; they're found in the
Iliad and the
Odyssey, the Hindu Vedas, and in ancient Near Eastern religious
texts, including the
Old Testament.

FEED DATE : 11-10-06
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: The history of human communication leans heavily on sound,
like this Morse code — a now vanishing artifact of the telegraph
era. Language depends on sound, of course, but there's one form
of communication that's purely visual and lighter than air: smoke.
In China and the Americas, smoke was used to send signals across
the landscape for centuries. For most of human history, smoke was
part of everyday life, but with environmental and health concerns,
it looks like we won't be seeing as much of it in
this century.
Visually, it's too bad — a smoky autumn makes a romantic haze
and
really spectacular dawns and sunsets.
Luckily, ambient music can make up for the atmosphere.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, a program of dark, hazy
electronics and ethereal songs for Scorpio called SMOKE SIGNALS.

PGM NOTE : a native flute excursion for autumn
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 11-03-06
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: Cedar is a species of evergreen with a spicy, fragrant,
resinous wood; it's famously a natural moth repellent, used in
closets. Soft and splintery yet strong, it also makes excellent
flutes with a warm, almost buttery tone. These instruments have
been played by Native Americans for thousands of years. It's a
sound we like to return to in the fall: wistful, tinged with
sadness, earthy and timeless.
In Indian cultures, the native flute played several roles,
from courtship to prayer ceremonies. Around a thousand years ago,
the Anasazi people of the American southwest — ancestors of the
Navajo, Ute, Hopi, Zuni, and Apache — created the "plains style"
flute. Today they're played in traditional ways _and_ used for
creative explorations by native and ambient musicians.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, a journey in the
native flute soundscape called CEDAR SHADOWS.

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : an emotional landscape for autumn
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 10-20-06
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: The word nostalgia originated in the 17th century as a
medical term for an illness caused by an intense desire to return
to one's native land. In time, it came to describe any strong
emotion driven by memory and desire for something in the imagined
past. "Nostalgia" writes LINDA HUTCHEON, "exiles us from the
present as it brings the imagined past near."
Nostalgia can be joyful, but more often it's marked by subdued
melancholy and longing — of losing oneself in a world of memory
and idealized projection. It has become a psychological condition,
an antidote to ironic detachment — incurable, because time moves
inexorably forward. In the modern world, the mythic journey, with
its themes of departure, farewell, exile, wandering, trial, and
return...evokes a powerful nostalgia, while the nostalgia for
simplicity, certainty and security...takes on a special appeal.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, we explore the
emotional landscape of autumn with music for cello, piano,
orchestra and voices.

INTRO: Autumn: a time of recession...a majestic, inexorable
withdrawal of energy as the northern hemisphere retreats, by
degrees, from the sun. It's a time of cooling, shrinking, ebbing,
descending, darkening — of preparation for the challenges
of winter.
In music, it's the sound of smoky timbres, dissonant harmonies,
descending progressions, slow suspensions — the sound of
disengagement, retreat, escape.

PGM NOTE : romantic, playful, epic — music of Cirque du Soleil
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 10-06-06
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: Despite frequent claims to the contrary, in show business
very few people have created something really new. GUY LALIBERTE,
founder of CIRQUE DU SOLEIL, is one of them.
With original partner DANIEL GAUTHIER and a small group of
street performers, Laliberte created Cirque du Soleil in Montreal
in 1984. Today, with over a dozen touring and resident productions,
including five in Las Vegas, Cirque du Soleil has become a kind of
benign entertainment empire, and Laliberte is one of the richest
men in Canada.
Cirque du Soleil modernized and extended the circus tradition
by eliminating animals, creating narrative storylines, and adding
elements of street performance, opera, ballet, rock and theater,
plus wildly creative costumes, dazzling stagecraft, and live
original music.

INTRO: The Japanese idea of beauty extends from brash and bold to
the ideal of beauty, called shibui. Shibui means an understated
kind of beauty, a quality that speaks quietly, for itself.
Shibui objects have a refined, unobtrusive sophistication. They
embody utility, maturity, complexity, history -- the patina that
only time can bring: a deeply spiritual kind of elegance, rooted
in the quiet appreciation of nature.
Today, both Japanese and western musicians attracted by this
aesthetic are creating fusions of traditional Japanese and
contemporary ambient music.

INTRO: "Cast your eyes upon the firmament" is a Biblical injunction
with a long history. But the celestial spectacle has been a musical
inspiration even before Biblical times.
More recently, electronic musicians especially have been drawn
to stellar metaphors/ both for subject matter and titles. On this
transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, a collection of pieces inspired
by the cosmic panorama.

INTRO: We normally think of Brazil as an extroverted country
that celebrates life's sensual pleasures, but there's also an
introverted, contemplative side of Brazilian culture, beautifully
expressed in the life and work of the poet CECELIA MEIRELES,
who died in 1964.
In the poem SOLOMBRA or "Sunshadow," she created an intimate
conversation between herself and the spirit of her beloved husband,
whose bouts with depression led him to suicide. The poem is a
"sorrow-song" of grief, loss, detachment, and remembrance.
"Life goes away," she writes, "but the song remains."
Northern California composer JANIS MATTOX has taken Cecelia
Meireles' poems as the text for an elegant 7 movement song cycle
for soprano, violin, cello, and piano. It was recorded in an intensely
lyrical live performance in 2005, featuring Bolivian soprano KATIA
ESCALERA. The entire piece is written in the natural harmonic
intervals of "just intonation," using a specially tuned and electron-
ically enhanced piano created by the Good Sound Foundation.
In over 20 years of Hearts of Space, we've only found a handful
of pieces we felt deserved a program all to themselves.
This is one of them.
SOLOMBRA: the moving words of CECELIA MEIRELES, sung in
Portuguese, the sublime music of composer JANIS MATTOX...
on this edition of HEARTS OF SPACE.

INTRO: Feedback: a precise word, a simple concept —
like looking in a mirror. But when applied to electronic music,
it has a complex history. It was controlled feedback that elevated
the electric guitar to the realm of the gods in the 1960s and fueled
the rock revolution immortalized by JIMI HENDRIX and satirized in
SPINAL TAP. [OK, things got a little out of hand...]
In the electronic music era, feedback expanded to
arrays of
mirrors to enrich tone, sustain notes, create rhythms, and imply
space through echoes. Today we harness tens of thousands of echoes
to create spatial illusions with digital reverb. It's all done...
with sophisticated feedback.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, we follow the feedback
with another journey in electronic space called HALL OF MIRRORS.

INTRO: In Indian music, the slow introduction of the raga is
called the alap. It is followed by movements of increasing speed
and activity, but the underlying tonal structure of the raga is
always maintained. The folk music of many cultures exhibits this
character — always moving and dynamic, yet calm at the center.
It's a metaphor we can use in our ever more dynamic lives.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, we range across music
with influences from Eastern Europe, Spain, the Middle East,
North Africa and India, on a program called STILLNESS IN MOTION.

INTRO: High on the list of the most significant inventions of
the 20th century, you might be surprised to find LEO FENDER'S
solid body electric guitar, which created or revolutionized
almost every genre of popular music. Not only was Fender an
electronics and design genius, he also had a talent for naming
his creations; first came the TELECASTER and the PRECISION BASS
in 1951, and then in 1954, the guitar that changed the musical
world forever: the STRATOCASTER.
Consider the references in this elegant neologism — a combi-
nation of stratosphere and broadcaster: in short, an electronic
instrument you can fly. No one could have predicted the evolution
of synthesizers and electronic spacemusic at that point...but
Leo Fender implied it, in a single word.

INTRO: Back in 1988, STEVE ROACH followed his intuition into a
breakthrough that launched a whole new sub-genre of electronic
music. Searching for something less technical and more profound,
he took a trip to the Australian outback, where he encountered
the primordial artifacts of a 40,000 year old Aboriginal culture.
The result was the classic album DREAMTIME RETURN, a fusion of
tribal sounds and instruments like the didgeridoo — with
electronics, trance percussion, and ambient atmospherics.
Today we call it techno-tribal.
It's worth pondering just what kind of nerve he struck.
Techno-tribal music took a big step toward humanizing and
deepening electronic music, expanding its rhythmic palette, and
reconnecting it to a much older tradition of psychoactive sound.
And when we open ourselves to the music of so-called "primitive"
cultures, we not only gain that experience, but a greater sense
of perspective on our own culture.

INTRO: In an age when musical fusions have become common,
flamenco stands as one of the great eclectic fusions — with an
extraordinary set of influences dating back to the 8th century,
when the Moors of North Africa conquered Andalusia and set in
motion the rich combination of Arabic, Moorish, Jewish, Gypsy
and Spanish elements that emerged in the late 18th century
as flamenco.
Every two years in September, the aficionados of flamenco
gather in the south of Spain for a month-long festival of music,
song and dance. This is a culture that comes with a lifestyle
attached; and that means late nights with lots of great music,
food, wine, and
way too much tobacco. Flamenco is unapologetically
excessive in its pursuit of passion.
