PGM NOTE : wintry bells, resonant gongs, and glass harmonica

INTRO: Let's talk about bells for a minute. Once upon a time,
all the clocks had bells. Time came clanging and resonating
across our towns and cities every hour with the sound of a bell
from the town hall. It's almost quaint to recall in this era of
the electronic ringtone, but we used to have real brass bells in
every telephone in America. (I know this because I took them
apart when I was a teenager.) All the churches had BIG bells.
And, of course, there were sleigh bells in the winter, and we
still had bell ringers at Christmas.
In Asia, they had gongs, metallophones, and all kinds of
ceremonial bells. And in Tibet, they made bells out of alloys
of many metals, achieving rich mixtures of tone, and crystalline
bells of amazing purity that were used as tools for meditation.
So, what I'm saying here is that bells go way back, but the role
they play in society had a lot to do with where and when.
From celebratory to alarming, calming to psychoactive,
meditative to mundane, bells are one of the seven wonders
of sound and music, and we're going to feature them
on this edition of HEARTS of SPACE.

PGM 754 : "SUMMONING THE MUSE"
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : a tribute to the music of Dead Can Dance
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: The Anglo/Irish/Australian band DEAD CAN DANCE hit an
uncommonly rich musical vein as they evolved. Starting as a gloomy
"darkwave" rock band in Australia in 1981, they moved to London and
soon embraced ancient, modal, medieval and world music influences.

Like all true artists, they transformed these into something much more
than the sum of its parts. Fronted by LISA GERRARD's incomparable
wordless vocals and BRENDAN PERRY's superb production, they created
a deep and beautiful sound that's been tremendously influential for
artists from Classical to Gothic, New Age to Dark Ambient.

In 2005, Projekt Records released a multi-artist tribute to DEAD CAN
DANCE that's the inspiration for this edition of Hearts of Space.
We celebrate the legacy of DEAD CAN DANCE on a program called
SUMMONING THE MUSE.

INTRO: At the very heart of winter, icy sounds reverberate
across a suspended landscape; the glowing curtains of the
Northern lights dazzle the stoic residents of the polar regions,
as ions from storms on the sun blow through the earth's
magnetosphere. It's an elemental lightshow from the beginning
of time.

FEED DATE : 1-06-06
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: After the press of year-end business and the excitement
of the holidays, a person's thoughts turn to taking a little
mid-winter break. In short, it's time to CHILL OUT.
On this hour of Hearts of Space, we're going to do just that
with the help of a group of ambient and spacemusic composers.
The term "chill out," of course, comes to us from the chill rooms
of the rave/techno scene, where overheated dancers go to relax.
