PGM NOTE : a journey in the Mediterranean soundscape

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: The Balearic Islands — Mallorca, Minorca, Ibiza, and
Formentera — occupy prime real estate in the Mediterranean Sea,
just off the eastern coast of Spain. In ancient times, it was a
tough neighborhood; the islands were invaded successively by the
Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Vandals, Byzantines, Arabs,
and finally, the Aragons.
These days things are lively, but a lot quieter — they're all
popular tourist destinations, home to a tapestry of musical
cultures that matches their multi-cultural past, and an up-to-date
vibe that runs from acoustic to electronic, sensual to chilled.

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : an AL GROMER KHAN retrospective
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 6-02-06
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: With this languid blues, we begin a journey into the
exotic ambient music of German artist AL GROMER KHAN.
Every real artist has a story, and his begins with a concert
of Indian music by VILAYAT KHAN he attended as a young man in the
1960s. So powerful was the impression it made upon him that he
immediately decided to devote his life to the study of the sitar,
eventually changing his surname and becoming the first European
member of the khan-i-garana — a lineage of Indian musicians.
While Indian at heart, he retained his German work ethic and
comfort with technology — which served him well during a long
and productive career marked by over 20 solo albums and 16
collaborations on a dozen record labels. Inspired by the sublime
aesthetics of the Mughul culture of 17th century India (which
produced the Taj Mahal), his subtle, poetic style of contemplative
music is marked by an effortless originality. Whether using the
latest electronics or a three-thousand year old Indian instrument,
no one sounds quite like him.

PGM NOTE : an Arabic-North African journey
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 5-26-06
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: The haunting rhythms of North African music:
it creates a state of equilibrium in motion.

One of the great masters of this genre passed away in May 2006:
Nubian musician HAMZA EL DIN. With his gentle voice and his skillful
performances on the
oud -- the Arabian short-neck lute, and the tar --
the ancient single-skin frame drum of the upper Nile, Hamza El Din
was a true cultural ambassador, introducing hundreds of thousands of
westerners to the sound and spirit of his desert culture. During a long
and fruitful career, his original compositions joined the delicate textures
of Arabic music with the earthy, indigenous music of his native Nubia.

temples over a thousand years old. With their brilliant decoration,
these buildings celebrate love — one of the three aims of life
in the Hindu religion. The
music of India also celebrates love
in its many devotional songs and chants. This is love of a
different order — the love of spiritual evolution and worship of
the divine.

INTRO: We didn't plan it that way, but this show wound up
almost all English music. And why not? England remains a breeding
ground and innovator for all kinds of new genres. This time, a report
from the intersection of downtempo, chill, and deep ambient --
a place where digital beats and lyrical melodies float...
over ambient soundscapes.
English musician and producer BRIAN ENO, who more or less
invented the term "ambient," once observed that certain kinds of
electronic music could be heard as "fast music with slow
underpinnings...or slow music, with fast ornamentation."
However YOU hear it, on this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE,
it's a downtempo journey called DEEP GROOVE: 'groove' because
it moves with a hypnotic rhythm; 'deep' because it takes you
somewhere worth going.

INTRO: Every year at Easter, we take the opportunity to catch up
on the finest sounds in sacred choral music. There's something
mysterious and majestic in the sound of voices in harmony. As
often in the past, we turned to guest producer ELLEN HOLMES of
Adagio Recordings, who brought us a bouquet of sublime pieces
from the repertoire.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, our common theme is
QUIET PRAYERS. Not only Easter sacred music -- but sacred music
that sounds _right_ on Easter. It comes from many countries and
spans several centuries: from medieval hymns to 21st century
art songs.

PGM NOTE : a MARK HOLLIS retrospective
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 4-07-06
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: The story of English singer/songwriter MARK HOLLIS is an
inspiration to serious musicians and listeners everywhere -- a
lesson in 'following the muse' to a place of true creativity.
Born in London in 1955, Hollis came of age in the 1970s and
embarked on the mythic road to fame and fortune by starting a
rock band. After a few false starts it worked, and the group
TALK TALK began a short, brilliant pop music career that included
several gold records in England and Europe in the 1980s.
But Mark Hollis' artistic yearnings pulled him off the beaten
track and into a subtle, moving and deeply contemplative space
-- influenced by jazz, blues, ambient and chamber music, yet
sounding unlike anyone else, before or since.
The two final TALK TALK albums, SPIRIT OF EDEN from 1988 and
LAUGHING STOCK from 1991, plus a 1998 solo album titled simply
MARK HOLLIS, are all quiet masterpieces and timeless works of art,
graced by profoundly poetic lyrics and vocals from powerfully
emotional...to evanescent.

INTRO: Waiting out the seemingly endless period between winter
and spring can be a challenge. While our psyches are reaching
for release from the constricting grip of winter, our rational
minds must practice patience and equanimity. Ambient music can
help us expand and float across this transition on electronic
waves. On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, an intra-
seasonal electronic journey called INVERSION.

INTRO: The long and inexorable road to spring sometimes requires
an extra measure of patience. In California, the first blossoms
appear early, bringing a precarious sense of hope, long before
the winter storms have passed. Confined indoors, movement
constrained, it's a good time for ambient music, with its
sustained mood of intimacy, warmth, and gentle ecstasy.

PGM NOTE : exploring the world of ambient film music
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 3-17-06
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: Here's the thing about soundtrack albums: no matter how
good the music in the film is, you just never know how good the
CD will be.
Some of the best composers and studio musicians in the world
work on these projects. No expense is spared to record the music and
mix it into the film. Then, the soundtrack CD is thrown together in a
few days from dozens of short "cues," padded with "incidental music"
or songs from hot young bands, and rushed to market in time for the
film's opening. As listening experiences go, they're totally unpredictable:
you just never know.
Yet the original function of film music has a lot in common
with ambient and space music -- to color the environment, evoke
emotion, and underscore the action on the screen -- just like
ambient does to the action in your room.

INTRO: Back in 1990, we did a program called "Mostly Infinite
Guitars" celebrating MICHAEL BROOK's effort to dematerialize the
electric guitar. The title was kind of cute, and we found more
music, so three years later we followed it up with an even cuter
one called "More Infinite Guitars."
Fast forward to 2006. Other guitar shows have come and gone,
and once again we have lots of great material for a new show.
We could call it "Still More Infinite Guitars," but you know, we
didn't really start this series properly. On this transmission of
Hearts of Space, a retro-future-ambient-guitar journey called
just plain "INFINITE GUITARS."
