INTRO: In an age when musical fusions have become common,
flamenco stands as one of the great eclectic fusions — with an
extraordinary set of influences dating back to the 8th century,
when the Moors of North Africa conquered Andalusia and set in
motion the rich combination of Arabic, Moorish, Jewish, Gypsy
and Spanish elements that emerged in the late 18th century
as flamenco.
Every two years in September, the aficionados of flamenco
gather in the south of Spain for a month-long festival of music,
song and dance. This is a culture that comes with a lifestyle
attached; and that means late nights with lots of great music,
food, wine, and
way too much tobacco. Flamenco is unapologetically
excessive in its pursuit of passion.
