PGM NOTE : a journey across time and space:
celebrating 25 years of syndicated radio broadcasting
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 1-11-08
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO: 1983...the year before the infamous 1984. It seems lifetimes
ago, but that was the year that a syndicated music program called
HEARTS of SPACE began to appear on public radio stations around
the U.S. And that means that 2008 is the 25th anniversary of the
national program.
To celebrate our 25th year, we've selected 25 programs that
give an overview of the series and the sound we call ambient,
space and contemplative music. We're going to call the series
"25 YEARS IN SPACE." We'll start with three retrospective shows
this month, and then one a month after that.
Beginnings take on more significance over time, so we'll begin
the series with Program Number One, "FIRST FLIGHT." On our
premiere program, we featured music by a group of artists who
became familiar names in the HEARTS of SPACE pantheon of
composers. It's a journey across 25 years of time...and space.

INTRO: Winter...the chill creeps into your bones, while the
darkness steals into your psyche. For most of us, life slows
a bit and moves indoors, but for those hardy souls with the
metabolism to venture out into the landscape, a world of
subtle colors awaits, with deep vistas of heightened clarity,
or atmospheric effects of fog, rain, and snow.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, a cold day journey
in blue-grey soundscapes called WINTER LIGHT.

INTRO: THE HARP. For over 4000 years, it's brought
the human family a little bit of heaven on earth.
From its beginnings in Mesopotamia, it spread across
the ancient world to Asia, Egypt, Greece, and Africa.
In Medieval times, it was used for sacred and secular
music, and to comfort the dying.
As the instrument of the bards and troubadors,
it played a key role in the evolution of folk music.
In the 19th century, the pedal harp matured into a
concert instrument and took its place in the orchestra.
And in the 20th century it went electric — even laser.
Whether wirestrung, cross-strung, single, double,
or triple strung, pedal or electric, folk or classical —
there are harps for every purpose.

INTRO: The legacy of choral singing is never more cherished
than during the holiday season, when it brings warmth and light
to the winter darkness by opening the heart and feeding the soul.
From the Christian churches and cathedrals of Europe and the U.S.,
to the Orthodox churches of Russia, central Asia, and the Holy Land,
the human family gathers to listen, sing, and worship together.
After more than ten centuries of evolution, some of the finest
choral music was written in the last 100 years by a special breed
of contemporary composers, who respect and extend the tradition.
On this transmission of Hearts of Space, another compilation
of sublime choral pieces from our longtime guest producer
ELLEN HOLMES called TO THEE WE SING.

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : contemplative hymns and prayers for the holiday season
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 12-14-07
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO: The Greek word hymnos means a "song of praise,"
prayer or adoration, normally to a god or religious figure.
The roots of the word go back to the Hittites over six thousand
years ago and mean "to sing." There were hymns in ancient
Egypt and India; in the west, the Homeric hymns, praising
the gods of Greek mythology, date from the 7th century B.C.
Praise is affirmative, so hymns are naturally positive experi-
ences. Whether stirring and intense, or quiet and contemplative,
the effect is to lift the spirit. It's a feeling that's abundant
during the end of the year holiday season, a time when —
against all odds —the human family renews its commitment
to generosity, goodwill and peace.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, a selection of
quietly joyous hymns and instrumental prayers called HYMNOS.

INTRO: Each year in December, we gather to sing sacred hymns
and songs. For over a millennium, the holiday season in Christian
cultures has been associated with the sublime, ethereal high voices
of female sopranos, male sopranos or countertenors, and boys choirs.
In the massed voices, we hear an image of unity and peace;
in the heavenly harmonies, we hear the sound of angels,
magically brought to earth.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, a holiday celebration
of choral singing called VOICES IN THE NIGHT.

INTRO: The life of a political slogan is rarely glorious and
always brief. Bush the Elder had a memorable one in 1988
which lingered past its natural lifespan as a weapon of satire:
"a thousand points of light."
Despite the history, it's a lovely image that comes alive as
we enter the holiday season and light becomes a symbol of
joy and generosity of spirit. On this transmission of Hearts
of Space, we sound the season with a turn-of-winter journey
called POINTS OF LIGHT.

INTRO: What could be simpler? A guitar, a violin, a flute —
yet in the hands of the veteran Celtic tunesmiths of NIGHTNOISE,
the combination acquires a timeless dignity and emotional resonance.
Built over centuries of life hard-lived and keenly-felt, Celtic music
brings a proud legacy, and a determination to reach out to each
generation of listeners anew.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE called ISLE OF DREAMING,
a journey across the Celtic soundscape in search of the old, the new,
and the reborn.

INTRO: If there's one quality that applies to every variety
of jazz, it's great musicianship. These cats can *really* play,
and sometimes they get so into it that virtuosity becomes
the subject of the music.
But there's another tradition in jazz, famously exemplified
by MILES DAVIS' classic KIND OF BLUE. Lyrical. Quiet.
Subtle. Spacious. It's not about how many notes you play:
it's about how beautifully you play them. As one musician
says, it's about "loving every note."
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, we explore a
quietly intense world of melody, space and feeling, on a
Nordic spacejazz journey called RESTRAINT.

INTRO: Composer HAROLD BUDD really started something
back in 1980 when he released THE PLATEAUX OF MIRROR,
the second album in BRIAN ENO's seminal Ambient Music series.
The chiming tones of Budd's floating electric piano, combined
with Eno's studio atmospheres, created what have been called
"enchanted landscapes and underwater domains."
It's a sound that's still influential and popular today:
accessible and enjoyable...while it quietly insinuates itself
into the deepest reaches of your psyche.

INTRO: The panorama of musical vocalization stretches across
cultural time and space, from simple songs and chants to the
most elaborate art music for chorus and orchestra. It's a medium
that continues to evolve, incorporating the past while it forges
into the future.
The origins of the Central Asian tradition of harmonic chanting
or "overtone" singing are lost in time, but are alive today, both
in source cultures like Tuva and Tibet, and in the work of
experimental singers and composers.
On this transmission of Hearts of Space, a journey into the
ghostly, floating world of harmonic singing.

INTRO: At the end of October we celebrate Halloween, the
lingering expression of the Celtic pagan festival that marked
the final extinction of summer. It's a time when the dead were
said to revisit the mortal world, and large communal bonfires
were lit to ward off the dark spirits. Today it's devolved into
a commercial event for the candy industry, with an unusually
grim theme — while the fires, at least in California, are a
fearsome, destructive presence.
On this transmission of Hearts of Space, we wander in the
gloomy underworlds, ghostly chambers and haunted caverns,
on a program called...BLACKWATER.

PGM NOTE : a dark ambient journey for Halloween
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 10-26-07
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: As we fall deeper into autumn's cooling embrace,
we arrive at a music of transition. Muted in color, restrained in
tempo, floating in space, receding...it invites us to contemplate
the eternal cycles of nature from a point of sonic equilibrium
within them.

INTRO: Chamber music is an indoor art by definition.
Yet nothing underscores the complex colors of the autumn
landscape like thesound of a chamber group, especially
when it includes the plaintive tones of the cello, the oboe,
or the acoustic guitar.
In the fading light, the shadows grow longer, the days
grow shorter, and the sounds of the season grow darker.
The natural world contracts...and prepares for the long
winter's sleep.
On this transmission of Hearts of Space, we echo the
season with a chamber-electronic journey for fall called
AN AUTUMN GARDEN.

PGM NOTE : gene-splicing Native flute and ambient electronics

INTRO: The "archaic revival" movement rediscovers forgotten
archetypes from our collective past. As MICKEY HART explained
in his book "Drumming at the Edge of Magic," when we look
back to the deepest origins of music, we rediscover the flute,
the rattle, and the drum."
On the North American continent, the native tribes built
their music on these elements — music for ritual, dance and
ceremony. At the end of the 20th century, the traditional genre
wastransformed when new instruments were added and the
cedar flute was popularized by Native musicians like CARLOS
NAKAI. Along with non-native and ambient musicians, they
opened up the tradition and expanded the sound to the scale
of the western landscape.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, we track the
gene-splicing of Native American music with ambient
electronics and the American landcape, on a program called
FLUTE RATTLE DRUM...SPACE.
