INTRO: Every 100 shows we take a retrospective look at some
aspect of the musical world of Hearts of Space. Over the last
20-plus years, we've covered everything from the Pachelbel
"Canon" to the roots of electronic space and ambient music —
from the German electronic music of the 1970s to the inter-
section of spacemusic and rock — with a stop along the way
for a tribute to JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH.

On this 800th edition of Hearts of Space, a report on the
ongoing diffusion of the space and ambient sound into the
world of popular music.

INTRO: Some combinations exhibit a natural harmony.
They go together, as they say, like bread and butter, milk
and cookies, and the ever popular peaches and cream.
And it's not just dairy products either — in music we have
the venerable rattle and drum, the harp and flute, guitar
and bass, and our subject today: piano and cello.

The rhythmic clarity and endless harmonic potential of the
piano, combined with the soulful, singing lines of the cello,
has inspired some of our greatest composers. And because
cellists often play piano as well, today some of them are playing
both instruments on their recordings. On this transmission of
Hearts of Space we summon the muse of complementarity,
on a program called AFFINITY.

INTRO: The occupation of the remote Himalayan country of Tibet
by China in 1949 forced an ancient non-violent Buddhist culture
to escape to northern India and Nepal, and from there, to spread
around the world. In this way, the folk and religious music
and spirituality of Tibet came to the west, along with musicians,
artists, monks and teachers like the Dalai Lama.

On this transmission of Hearts of Space, we focus on the
gentle sounds of Tibetan folk music...on a program called
MESSENGERS OF PEACE.

INTRO: Well, we didn't plan it that way, but this show wound
up almost all English music. And why not? England remains a
breeding ground and innovator for all kinds of new genres.
This time, a report from the intersection of downtempo, chill,
and deep ambient — a place where digital beats and lyrical
melodies float over ambient soundscapes.

English musician and producer BRIAN ENO, who more or less
invented the term "ambient," once observed that certain kinds
of electronic music could be heard as "fast music with slow
underpinnings...or slow music with fast ornamentation."

However YOU hear it, on this transmission of HEARTS of
SPACE, it's a downtempo journey called DEEP GROOVE.
'Groove' because it moves with a hypnotic rhythm;
'Deep' because it takes you somewhere worth going.
