PGM 809R : "AFRICAN GENESIS"
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : a journey into the quiet heart of Africa
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 8-29-08
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: The lilting songs of the Baka pygmies of Cameroon have
achieved international fame through the efforts of sympathetic
Western musicians. Just as DNA research has shown that Africa is
the origin point of the human species, in the last 200 years, the
infectious rhythms and harmonies of African music have bred new
styles of western music — originally laying the foundation for
blues, jazz and other forms of popular music, and more recently,
spawning a host of brilliant variations of what we now call
World Music.

While the majority of African music is for dance and celebration,
there's also a more contemplative sound. On this transmission
of Hearts of Space, we journey through the rhythms into the quiet
heart of African music...on a program called AFRICAN GENESIS.

INTRO: Here in the days of "water cubes" and Olympic size
indoor pools,
summer is the time we renew our relationship
with water. In ocean, lake, river and pool, we
immerse ourselves
in earth's most precious fluid. And when we do, one of the most
agreeable sensations is one of the simplest: just...floating.

Floating is the goal-less, relaxed, "here and now" side of
swimming. And it's also something we enjoy in space and
ambient music, as we float in oceans and rivers...of sound.
On this transmission of Hearts of Space, a journey called
THE FLOAT ZONE.

PGM 848 : "READING THE BONES"
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : a techno-triba-delic journey
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 8-15-08
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: It's all so clear in retrospect. The electronic music
revolution of the 1970s empowered artists to explore a new
palette of ethereal sounds and unnatural atmospheres.
In less than 10 years, a new musical language emerged in
Europe, the U.S., and Japan, and spread around the world.
By the 1980s, they looked around...and it was good.

But it didn't take long before a few of these artists realized
that something was missing: the vital, rhythmic foundation
of ethnic and primitive music, famously built into
rock from
the African roots of Rhythm & Blues. So just as early 20th
century painters looked to Africa, Polynesia, and other ancient
cultures for vitality and connection to the archaic human
experience — electronic musicians "went tribal."

The moment was marked by STEVE ROACH's famous trip to
the Australian outback and his 1988 album "Dreamtime Return,"
a title that wraps up the idea in two well-chosen words.
But other artists were already moving in this direction, first
crossing cultural barriers and then heading back in time,
to the roots of music and sound itself.

The genre that emerged was called "techno-tribal" —
a psycho-acoustic, trance-ambient music that combined
electronics, atmospherics, ethnic percussion (rainsticks,
rattles, drums), and didgeridoos. The combination possessed
some of the psychedelic powers of its shamanic forbears,
and it lives on today.

to the Ayatollah, but one thing's for sure: the age of exotic
mixtures of music from all over the world is a fact of life.

On this 25th Anniversary retrospective series edition of a
1996 Hearts of Space program called EXOTICA, we continue our
exploration of
world spacemusic, with a focus on India.

INTRO: The evolution of the Spanish guitar, beginning with the
nomadic Arabic lute, through North Africa and into Moorish-era
Spain — is easy to forget. Today the guitar has found its way
into a hundred other genres and musical contexts, from African
to Country to Heavy Metal. Yet there's something that just
sounds natural in the Andalusian roots of the Spanish guitar
and the Mediterranean music that developed from it.

On this transmission of Hearts of Space, we focus on the
Spanish guitar...on a program called ECHOES OF SPAIN.

INTRO: Now there's a sound that got a lot of people excited
back in 1978: the rich, mysterious, romantic, oh-so-French
electronic music of JEAN MICHEL JARRE, from EQUINOXE.

One of only a handful of electronic musicians to achieve

popular stardom, Jarre continues to perform all over the world.
His free outdoor sound and light concerts in Houston, Paris,
Moscow, China, and a 12-hour spectacular at the Great
Pyramids in Egypt for the Millennium celebration, have set
records as the largest public music events in history,
with audiences of up to 3.5 million.

On this 25th Anniversary retrospective edition of Hearts
of Space, a program of spacemusic in the grand tradition —
intensely emotional music that takes off from the orchestral
tone poem and navigates into uncharted electronic space.

individuality and self-assurance — has been proudly on display.

This year, our celebration is tempered by a growing awareness of
the great challenges we face in national, global and even planetary
affairs. You have to look back to the 1930s to find a comparable
period, but even those challenges seem limited by comparison.

So this year we celebrate the founding of America with the knowledge
that American ideals and the American character are being tested.
If Americans can respond positively to the challenges we face, we
may look back on this period as the time of America's maturity.

American music today reflects the maturing of our melting-pot of
cultural traditions — hymns, folk and popular songs, blues, jazz,
electronica, maverick classical, ethnic rhythms, and immigrant
genres — a complex panorama of musical sources, freely invented
and reinvented. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, we listen
for the reflective side of the American soundscape, on a program
called AMERICAN CROSSROADS.

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: The Cosmic Journey school of electronic spacemusic
includes soundtracks for imaginary sci-fi movies, deep-drifting
stellar soundscapes, and spiritual innerspace explorations.

With its tonal flights across the galaxies and vast cosmic dramas,
the genre appeared to be an artifact of the 1980s. Like progressive
rock, it seemed to implode at its peak — a victim, perhaps, of its
own considerable success...and the fact that it takes real
inspiration and talent to do it well.

Artists like CONSTANCE DEMBY, IASOS and MICHAEL STEARNS
in California, JONN SERRIE in Atlanta, VANGELIS and KLAUS
SCHULZE in Europe, TOMITA, STOMU YAMASHTA and KITARO
in Japan, created an ethereal, expansive, cosmic sound that
found kindred spirits in symphonic composers like GUSTAV
HOLST, RALPH VAUGHAN WILLIAMS, ALAN HOVHANESS,
and the monumental sound cathedrals of BACH.

On this transmission of Hearts of Space called STELLAR
VISIONS, we're pleased to report that the genre's still alive,
with new artists and fine new work — at least in California.

INTRO: Dramatic, darkly emotional, and still exotic to Western ears,
the music of the Middle East continues to fascinate contemporary
musicians.

We're listening to a nicely crafted example of the Biblical epic
genre of movie music by SHELDON MIROWITZ from the soundtrack
for the television production "Columbus and the Age of Discovery."

On this 25th Anniversary retrospective edition of Hearts of Space,
we journey once again through these ancient nomadic soundspaces,
softly wailing melodies, and gently rocking rhythms, on a program
called CARAVAN.

INTRO: These days electronic waveforms bubble up from every
corner of the globe like some kind of benign gas. Wherever they
come from, they often share the qualities of flying...or floating.

Flying music is rhythm-powered and moves through space,
heading for worlds beyond;
floating music is goal-free —
ethereal, static, and timeless.

On this transmission of Hearts of Space, another electronic
journey in our flying and floating series called...
FLYING and FLOATING 2.

PGM NOTE : the contemplative minimalism of LUDOVICO EINAUDI
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 5-30-08
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: Italian composer LUDOVICO EINAUDI has enjoyed a long
and very successful career in Europe, marked by a dozen albums,
fifteen film scores, hundreds of concerts and a retrospective
performance at the famous opera house La Scala in Milano.

Einaudi began in the 1970s as a student of Italian avant-garde
composer LUCIANO BERIO at the Conservatory of Milan. He
came to the U.S. on a scholarship in 1982, where he absorbed
the language of classical minimalism, American popular and
ambient music — and laid the foundations for his own warm,
delicate, melodic style.

Like fine Italian food, fashion and design, Einaudi's music has
a humanized opulence and sensual appeal. The elements are
simple and often repetitive; the effect is subtle, contemplative,
satisfying, even profound.

On this transmission of Hearts of Space, a LUDIVICO EINAUDI
retrospective called DIVENIRE. We have music from across his
career, including selections from STANZE, LE ONDE, I GIORNI,
EDEN ROC, our title album DIVENIRE or "Become," and his lush
soundtrack for the film SOTTO FALSO NOME.
