INTRO: Cold, clear and quiet, we drift through frozen
lakes and glacial terrain on a journey to the heart of winter.
It's a sound of tiny movements locked within great static
masses, deep drones and crystalline accents, punctuated by
the reverberation of great natural events.

INTRO: Electronic music has been evolving for the better part
of a century now. The novelty has come and gone, and in recent
years, electronics have found their way into dozens of genres.
But there's one place where it really feels like home: electronic
spacemusic.
Whether cruising across distant starfields, drifting through
clouds of interstellar dust, or just floating peacefully in the
good ole cosmic soup, spacemusic takes us to a galaxy far,
far away. That may be escapism, but hey, we like it. We might
even need it. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, we harvest
a nice crop of melodic/chordal spacemusic on a program called
ELECTROSPHERE.

INTRO: In its three hundred year history, the piano has grown
both larger and smaller, gone electric and then electronic, and
been the anchor and reference point for a sizeable fraction of
Western music. Through it all, the range, versatility, rhythmic
clarity and melodic appeal of the instrument has kept it at the
forefront of music from pop, to jazz, to classical.
For a few rare artists, the piano can be magically transformed
into a personal voice -- a heart to heart communication channel
direct to the listener. On this transmission of Hearts of Space,
we listen for that personal touch, on a contemplative journey
called PIANOSCAPES 3.

INTRO: The yearning, glacial sound of Norwegian musician
JAN GARBAREK's tenor saxophone. It's traveled far and wide
from his home base at the Arctic edge of Europe. He was the
very first artist on the indispensable ECM label. In fact,
it's hard to imagine ECM without Norway; many of the musicians
are based there, and Oslo is ground zero for Rainbow Studios,
home of the crystalline, passionate ECM sound.

INTRO: Let's talk about bells for a minute. Once upon a time,
all the clocks had bells. Time came clanging and resonating
across our towns and cities every hour with the sound of a bell
from the town hall. It's almost quaint to recall in this era of
the electronic ringtone, but we used to have real brass bells in
every telephone in America. (I know this because I took them
apart when I was a teenager.) All the churches had BIG bells.
And, of course, there were sleigh bells in the winter, and we
still had bell ringers at Christmas.
In Asia, they had gongs, metallophones, and all kinds of
ceremonial bells. And in Tibet, they made bells out of alloys
of many metals, achieving rich mixtures of tone, and crystalline
bells of amazing purity that were used as tools for meditation.
So, what I'm saying here is that bells go way back, but the role
they play in society had a lot to do with where and when.
From celebratory to alarming, calming to psychoactive,
meditative to mundane, bells are one of the seven wonders
of sound and music, and we're going to feature them
on this edition of HEARTS of SPACE.

PGM NOTE : a tribute to the music of Dead Can Dance
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO: The Anglo/Irish/Australian band DEAD CAN DANCE hit an
uncommonly rich musical vein as they evolved. Starting as a gloomy
"darkwave" rock band in Australia in 1981, they moved to London and
soon embraced ancient, modal, medieval and world music influences.
Like all true artists, they transformed these into something much more
than the sum of its parts. Fronted by LISA GERRARD's incomparable
wordless vocals and BRENDAN PERRY's superb production, they created
a deep and beautiful sound that's been tremendously influential for
artists from Classical to Gothic, New Age to Dark Ambient.
In 2005, Projekt Records released a multi-artist tribute to DEAD CAN
DANCE that's the inspiration for this edition of Hearts of Space.
We celebrate the legacy of DEAD CAN DANCE on a program called
SUMMONING THE MUSE.

INTRO: Drifting in the winter atmosphere / chiming tones echo
across the icy fjords / and the cello sings of the melancholy depths /
in a land of life suspended.
It's a sound and an image we return to from time to time.
I'm Stephen Hill, and we're going to do it once again on this
edition of Hearts of Space...called NORTHERN LIGHTS 3.

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 12-23-05
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO: If music can be called sacred, then it must exalt the
spirit, heal the psyche and focus the mind (to some degree) on
the eternal. And it must do this while immersed in the heartache,
joy and imperfection of the human panorama.
Each year during the holiday season, something deep in the
human spirit reaches out through all the chaos and compromise of
our world, in search of images of a more perfect place. In the
words of E.C. LE GUIN, "Since time out of mind, singing has been
principal to the observation of this sacred and crucial time;
it celebrates, exhorts, reflects; in it we can find an outlet
or a retreat."
On this transmission of Hearts of Space, a journey in the
eternal spaces of sacred music called VOX SUBLIMAE (sublime voices).

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : a journey in contemplative sound and light
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 12-09-05
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO: PHOS HILARON is the name of an ancient Greek hymn sung
at the lighting of the evening candles; it means "joyful light"
-- an act of devotion embedded in a daily ritual. Here in the
northern hemisphere, the light of the sun is at its lowest at
the winter solstice, so we illuminate the season with every
kind of light. We gather in reverberant spaces and sing together.
The sound of massed voices is an image of harmony and unity;
echoing on itself, it builds an image of infinity.
The history of devotional chant extends thousands of years
before the Christian era. In the monasteries of medieval Europe,
chant became a form of worship, a foundation of the daily ritual.
Even in our chaotic, mostly secular times, across boundaries of
culture and religion -- these venerable chants have the power
to move us deeply.

journey through the fragile, pellucid landscape of the psyche,

INTRO: This week it's the Thanksgiving holiday -- the perfect time
to explore the feeling of gratitude. The Taoist masters teach us
that autumn is the time to reflect upon life. If we've enjoyed a
good harvest or a successful year, we express our thanks. If the
year's been difficult, then we're thankful for what we have and
resolve to do better in the future. Yet the true appreciation of
life doesn't require wealth or plenty, if we acknowledge the
precious quality of everyday things. It requires only...GRATITUDE.

INTRO: The signature sound of the wirestrung harp, the signature
lilt of a Celtic dance: a signal that joy, beauty, and wistful sadness --
the panorama of human emotion -- will stretch our feelings.
As always the musicianship is extraordinary; there must be more musical
and vocal talent per square mile in the Celtic regions than almost anywhere.
It's a genre that's met and mastered the test of time, combining past and
present, tradition and creativity, and reinventing itself for every generation.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, another journey in the Celtic
soundscape called CELTIC TWILIGHT 3.
