INTRO: The life of a political slogan is rarely glorious and
always brief. Bush the Elder had a memorable one in 1988
which lingered past its natural lifespan as a weapon of satire:
"a thousand points of light."

Despite the history, it's a lovely image that comes alive as
we enter the holiday season and light becomes a symbol of
joy and generosity of spirit. On this transmission of Hearts
of Space, we sound the season with a turn-of-winter journey
called POINTS OF LIGHT.

INTRO: If there's one quality that applies to every variety
of jazz, it's great musicianship. These cats can *really* play,
and sometimes they get so into it that virtuosity becomes
the subject of the music.

But there's another tradition in jazz, famously exemplified
by MILES DAVIS' classic KIND OF BLUE. Lyrical. Quiet.
Subtle. Spacious. It's not about how many notes you play:
it's about how beautifully you play them. As one musician
says, it's about "loving every note."

INTRO: Composer HAROLD BUDD really started something
back in 1980 when he released THE PLATEAUX OF MIRROR,
the second album in BRIAN ENO's seminal Ambient Music series.

The chiming tones of Budd's floating electric piano, combined
with Eno's studio atmospheres, created what have been called
"enchanted landscapes and underwater domains."

It's a sound that's still influential and popular today:
accessible and enjoyable...while it quietly insinuates itself
into the deepest reaches of your psyche.

INTRO: The panorama of musical vocalization stretches across
cultural time and space, from simple songs and chants to the
most elaborate art music for chorus and orchestra. It's a medium
that continues to evolve, incorporating the past while it forges

The origins of the Central Asian tradition of harmonic chanting
or "overtone" singing are lost in time, but are alive today, both
