PGM NOTE : a RICHARD BURMER Retrospective
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 2-23-07
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: Composer RICHARD BURMER was born in Michigan in 1955
and died there far too young in 2006. Like many talented creators,
he struggled with depression, and his demons eventually overcame
him. But in a brief, fruitful 20 year career, he created some
extraordinary music that helped fulfill the early promise of
electronic music as a popular art.

After studying music in college, Richard was drawn to the
burgeoning electronic music community in California. Moving to
Los Angeles in the late 1970s, he worked as an engineer designing
synthesizers for several innovative companies while perfecting
his own music. Portly, bespectacled, intense and unconcerned with
appearances, he was one of those people who contradicted every
stereotype about Los Angeles. After getting a record deal and
releasing his first successful albums, he had enough and returned
to Michigan for good.

His music bore influences from Medieval, Renaissance, and
Indian music to Progressive Rock. It was always more musical than
electronic...and immaculately crafted. We'll be hearing selections
from four of Richard Burmer's five solo albums: BHAKTI POINT,
MOSAIC, INVENTION, and ON THE THIRD EXTREME, plus two pieces
from WESTERN SPACES, his joint album with STEVE ROACH
and KEVIN BRAHENY.

PGM NOTE : a journey beyond the north wind
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 2-16-07
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: Among the myths we've inherited from the ancient Greeks,
there's one about a "land beyond the north wind," a kind of
arctic paradise where the sun always shines and people live for
a thousand years. Since the north wind was named
borea, and
the Greeks weren't sure where this magical land actually was,
they simply called it hyper-borea: beyond...the north wind.

In the two and a half millennia since those mythy days of
Greece, the term has not been forgotten: it's been used in
literature by Nietzsche, James Joyce, Robert Howard, Stephen
King, and H.P. Lovecraft; in films, comics and video games;
by TANGERINE DREAM as an album title, BIOSPHERE as a
piece title, as the
name of a Finnish folk group, and not least —
a Bulgarian 'death metal' rock band.

PGM NOTE : a journey into the implacable heart of winter
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 2/09/2007
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: Just beyond the celebratory atmosphere of the end-of-the-
year holidays, we drop into something of an emotional slough of
despond. The inescapable, presence of winter cannot be ignored,
the weather hardens, and we must resign ourselves to the long wait
for spring. At times like these, it's good to return to serious
spacemusic composers for a bit of catharsis.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE called COLDBURN, we
take a journey into the implacable center of our wintry dilemma.

PGM NOTE : a wintry excursion for resonant percussion
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 2-02-07
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: Under somber skies burdened with chilled vapors,
we rediscover the enlightened sound of resonant percussion
instruments: bells, bowls, gongs and cymbals. This was the
original heavy metal music: since time out of mind, they've
been instruments of ceremony, ritual, and inner experience
— a sonic conduit to the deepest levels of the psyche.
