PGM 615R : "THE CONSTANT FLAME"
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : a warm acoustic journey to chase the autumn chill
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 11-24-06
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: In the russet/golden days of autumn, we gather round the
fire and the table to give thanks...with family, friends and food.
It's an inflection point, a moment of warmth and communion in the
busy days of year's end. On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE
called THE CONSTANT FLAME, we honor the emotional fire that fuels
music with creativity and passion, and the inner flame in us that
seeks it. In the words of composer ALEX CLINE, "It's a fire that
can warm, consume, illumine, destroy, purify, blind...or save."

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM 785 : "LAMENTO"
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : choral, vocal and instrumental music for the dark season
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 11-17-06
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: Descending into the short days of the dark season, we find
music that portrays human emotions at their most vulnerable: music
of pathos, loss and remembrance. These are some of our most
powerful and affecting feelings, and they call for music that
reaches into the depths of our souls.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, a special program of
choral, vocal and instrumental music for the dark season — from
guest producer ELLEN HOLMES — called LAMENTO.
A
lament is a cathartic song or poem expressing grief or
mourning. Many of the oldest and most enduring poems in human
history have been laments; they're found in the
Iliad and the
Odyssey, the Hindu Vedas, and in ancient Near Eastern religious
texts, including the
Old Testament.

PGM 784 : "SMOKE SIGNALS"
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : dark and hazy electronica for Scorpio
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 11-10-06
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: The history of human communication leans heavily on sound,
like this Morse code — a now vanishing artifact of the telegraph
era. Language depends on sound, of course, but there's one form
of communication that's purely visual and lighter than air: smoke.
In China and the Americas, smoke was used to send signals across
the landscape for centuries. For most of human history, smoke was
part of everyday life, but with environmental and health concerns,
it looks like we won't be seeing as much of it in
this century.
Visually, it's too bad — a smoky autumn makes a romantic haze
and
really spectacular dawns and sunsets.
Luckily, ambient music can make up for the atmosphere.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, a program of dark, hazy
electronics and ethereal songs for Scorpio called SMOKE SIGNALS.

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM 783 : "CEDAR SHADOWS"
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : a native flute excursion for autumn
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 11-03-06
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: Cedar is a species of evergreen with a spicy, fragrant,
resinous wood; it's famously a natural moth repellent, used in
closets. Soft and splintery yet strong, it also makes excellent
flutes with a warm, almost buttery tone. These instruments have
been played by Native Americans for thousands of years. It's a
sound we like to return to in the fall: wistful, tinged with
sadness, earthy and timeless.
In Indian cultures, the native flute played several roles,
from courtship to prayer ceremonies. Around a thousand years ago,
the Anasazi people of the American southwest — ancestors of the
Navajo, Ute, Hopi, Zuni, and Apache — created the "plains style"
flute. Today they're played in traditional ways _and_ used for
creative explorations by native and ambient musicians.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, a journey in the
native flute soundscape called CEDAR SHADOWS.
